7 Easy Tips for Applying Spray Tan at Home
Share
Spray tanning is perhaps the most popular sunless tanning option currently on the market. It beats tanning beds as it is a much healthier and quicker alternative, while the “at home spray tan equipment” and solutions are rather affordable and easily accessible these days.
For those of you who aren’t comfortable with going to a professional spray tanning salon or those who simply don’t have the time for it and want take care of their bronze in their own time, we at Artesian Tan suggest you opt for the spray tan at home option.
That being said, here are 7 pro tips on how to spray tan at home:
1. Find an Optimal Spray Tanning Room/Area
Admittedly, the at-home spray tan process can be quite messy, especially if you don’t do a proper job preparing everything for this fun, but tricky, experience. Make sure you have several old towels nearby as over-spray and spills are not rare, especially if you are a beginner.
Since this procedure can leave nasty stains on your tiles, walls, floors, furniture, and other surfaces in our home, we strongly suggest you find an area in your home and designate it for your upcoming DIY spray tanning session. This will minimize potential spilling and over-spray accidents, but just in case something does go wrong, have your cleaning products ready.
2. Thoroughly Exfoliate Your Skin (before the session)
In order to avoid those annoying streaks and the notorious orange color that sometimes tends to appear after spray tanning sessions, you should exfoliate thoroughly in order to remove the layer of dead skin cells that usually gets in the way, resulting in an uneven tan result. Pay close attention to skin areas around the knees, elbows, and heels.
Important Note: Don’t exfoliate right before your session, as this can open up your skin pores, and you don’t want your pores open during a spray tan session.
3. The Cold Water Trick
Although full-on showers are not recommended right before spray tanning, try blasting your skin a little bit using cold water as this can help your skin shrink the pores and thus reduce the risk of blocked pores.
4. If You Plan to Wax, Do It a Day Before
All those who also want to wax or shave their skin prior to getting spray tan at home, make sure you do your waxing at least 24 hours before the spray tanning session. This makes sure any possible cuts have healed enough and your skin has calmed after your waxing treatment.
5. No Deodorants or Antiperspirants
These products contain ingredients that are bound to react negatively with sunless tanning products, especially if you are opting for spray-on. If you wear deodorant during spray tanning, your armpits will most likely turn green.
6. Apply the Spray-On Solution as Evenly as Possible
Your body should be completely dry (to keep any streaks at bay), and you should try to apply the tanning solution as evenly as possible. When applying, hold the can (or the spray-on tan gun) about 8 inches from your skin. Be sure you are not alone for this as you will need help with hard-to-reach areas, like your back.
7. Apply the Tanner to Your Face and Hands Last
We suggest you wear gloves while applying the solution to your body, and then take them off when it is time for your hands to receive a layer. This way your hands won’t get too tanned during the process. When it comes to face application, spray the tanner lightly over your face, in form of a light mist.
